Before You Ship to China

Before you send a parcel to China, you should check Chinese Customs to make sure your parcel won't get held up for any reason. All parcels sent to China have to go through customs, so this is nothing to worry about and we'll send you all the documentation you need so your parcel can cross borders with ease.

To prevent any delays to your parcel, it's a good idea to avoid China's non-working days (Saturday and Sunday) and national holidays so you can be sure your item will arrive at its destination on time.

Clearing Chinese Customs and Charges

Clearing customs doesn’t have to be difficult. As long as you fill in the right documents, avoid sending prohibited items, and pay tax and duty if needed, then there’s no reason your delivery to China won’t breeze through the customs process.

When you send a parcel to China, it will be exempt from duties and tax if the value of your shipment is less than ¥500 (about £58*) or if it is a gift worth less than ¥1000 (about £116*). If the value of your shipment is over ¥1000, your parcel will have to go through formal customs clearance, which is a longer process so you should expect that your shipment to China will take a little longer to arrive.

Knowing how much duty and taxes you’ll have to pay will depend on what you’re sending, the value of your parcel, whether you’re a business or an individual and whether your parcel to China is a gift.

It can be confusing, but when you book your postage to China with Parcel2Go we will send you all the documents you need and your courier can explain any charges you might need to pay.

Our Top Tip

If you’re sending a return to a Chinese company, make sure to check that they accept returns through couriers. A lot of Chinese companies won’t accept a return if they are required to pay duties and taxes in order to receive the item. If you’ve already shipped your item to a company that doesn't accept returns by courier service, it will likely be held at customs and eventually returned to you.

China Address Format

It’s not always easy to know how to address a parcel from the UK to China. Not only are the languages so different from one another, but China’s addressing system isn’t as regulated as some countries in Europe. You can use this useful Chinese address formatting guide to better understand how to address a parcel to China and here's just one example:

Mr. ZHANG Jun

No.1 Jianguomenwai Avenue

100004 BEIJING

P.R. CHINA

We also recommend writing the recipient's address on your parcel in both English and Chinese. This can help Chinese delivery drivers know exactly where to deliver your parcel once it passes through customs.
